I have been fortunate to have powerful mentors and thoughtful guides find me – and join me - on life’s journey. Without them, my sales journey, specifically, would have been disastrous and short-lived. Through insightful questioning, I have been encouraged to see things differently than my own limited thoughts would allow. Sometimes the questions were tough, which means uncomfortable.

One of those guides challenged me with this statement: “Tim, you have no neutral thoughts.”

No neutral thoughts? That would mean no neutral outcomes. My guide went further to say “If you create a negative possibility in your thinking, you are sure to get what you want.”

“Wait, a minute. I didn’t say I wanted a negative outcome. I said I think about them.”

Again, he said, “Yes, Tim, and you’re sure to get what you want.”

“Listen to me! I Do-Not-Want-A-Negative-Outcome.”

He stayed on point, without waiver. “You must receive the message you give because it is the message you want.”

Then I was simply encouraged to chew on the message – You have no neutral thoughts.

As my career has moved onward and upward I have found that counsel to be steadfastly true. I had spent the bulk of my selling career predicting my own mediocrity and actually being deliberate about it.  My thoughts, under the guise of helping me, have been my self-sabotaging companion.

A Simple Guideline

The simple guideline for your selling career is to use the “As if” thinking technique. See, hear and feel every opportunity “as if” the outcome is exactly as you desire it. The key words here are “exactly” and “desire.”

My guide also said, “Everything you see is a result of your thoughts. There is no exception to this fact."

Folks, guard your sales thoughts.
